Lets play a new game

A few days ago while way out in the bush I saw something I see quite a lot, I really dont know why I see them when others dont, but having seen so many I knew exactly what it was immediately. It was right where I was about to put my foot, so I changed direction midstep leaving that mark on the ground as I stumbled.
Can you see it...the spider?
That mark near the centre of the photo is the door of a Trapdoor Spider. A big black hairy spider that will make you very sick indeed. I dont think I've ever been bitten by one but theres still time...

Here...let me bother it for you  (Steve Irwin Style)

I damaged the door a bit with my knife while opening it but the spider will soon fix that. (we all carry knives for fighting for ones life)
This opening is a full inch diameter which is pretty big because they tuck their legs under and over them as they go in meaning the hole is the exact size if their body. The hole is between 4 and 5 inches deep with a small underground cavaty at the bottom.  The hole is a work of art is it not, smoothed out and fully lined with silken web.
Ive seen Aboriginal people tease them into biting a blade of grass so they can be gently pulled from their hole. (Not sure why)

Now you can see it, right?

They pull them out of the hole in order to kill them, because spiders are evil.

Coooooool.

Get back out there with a piece of grass and snap a pic for me.

Wanna see the spider.

If the piece of grass doesn't do the trick, could I suggest your finger as an alternative bait?

Belle said...

Very cool, but I don't see a spider. I'd carry a knife around with me too.

Pearl said...

Oh, very nice.

You know, I once saw a video, something about "please come to Australia and experience the many ways Nature can kill you". I'm pretty sure I'm paraphrasing...

You people are pretty damn tough, aren't you? :-)

Hi Steve, I cant remember why they needed the spiders alive but they were quite careful not to hurt them.
Hey Jules, I've seen them, black and hairy with huge fangs with venom dripping from them..no thanks mate. I'll find you a pic from my vast archive.
Hi TSB, I did get real close trying to reflect the flash down the hole but still didnt get a pic of incy wincy. The Sydney funnel web kills people and is one of the most deadly spiders we have, ours are less dangerous but not to the point where I'd be stupid enough to try handling one.
Hi Belle, I dont hassle the wildlife but I will find a pic, I have one somewhere. My mate placed his swag over a funnelweb hole and in the morning found a huge spider among his bedding. It got out of the hole during the night but he rolled over and prevented the spider getting back into it's home...so it shared his bed. (that was the last time he slept on the ground)
Hi Pearl, yes I know the video of which you speak..very funny! When you see these critters all your life you get used to it, not so much tough as simply conditioned to it.

I noticed the trapdoor straight away, I've seen them before so I knew what I was looking at. My dad had them in his backyard in Port Augusta. I once saw a spider scuttle back in and pull the door shut behind him.

Tempo said...

Hi River, yes I've seen them scurry back in and slam the door and once when I opened the lid one came out at me all furious that I'd invaded it's home. I figured you would be familiar with them, they seem to be quite common around this area

You have a Cool Blog Good Sir.... on a note I do not think that the "Trap-Door Spiders" around here are very poisonous...( But then I have never been bitten by one .... Had some other "nasty" bites... one from 15 years ago, still causes the skin of my finger to start dying... especially if I am bitten or stung by another "Nasty Bug") Plenty of Black Widows and other venomous things though... All part of living in the country... You have Many more posts for me to still read...
