Australia has a new Prime Minister

Today our former Prime minister, Kevin Rudd stood down and allowed his deputy, Julia Gillard to be voted new Prime Minister by her parliamentary colleagues.
We Australians were not asked if we wanted a new Prime Minister..
A few powerful unions and a few Labour Party factions got together and decided for us... and they still call us a democracy.

Julia is our first female Prime Minister and that is being used as a pretext to help them get away with it...

Julia, is a lawyer.

Julia has worked as a lawyer for the countries unions for some time before entering politics.

Julia may well be a better Prime Minister than Kevin Rudd...

But still I would have liked the opportunity to vote for her myself.

This wasn't covered at all here in the States. It always amazes me that the whole world follows our elections and we know very little about theirs.

If for any reason the President can't serve his full term, the VP takes over here, so I guess it's almost the same thing. We would not be able to vote until the next election year and there wouldn't even be a pretense of any sort of voting.

Hey Tempo, look on the bright side. When this same thing happened to us, we got Gordon Brown. Indigo

Hi Jen, Our system is the same as England, with the same advantages...and the same problems.

Hi Indigo, I'm not sure Julia will be any better...yet! She is very closely connected to the union movement...which could be bad for the country.

You sure you're not in the U.S.? We get some pretty hinky electoral decisions made around here as well...
